Flat tires can be overwhelming — in fact, they can be dangerous if you’re unprepared. With these tips from our Jeep® service team at Blaise Alexander Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM of State College, you’ll be ready to react.

Navigate to a Safe Space

If you get a flat tire while you’re driving, don’t panic. Turn on your hazard lights and slowly navigate to the closest safe space. To avoid rolling, apply your parking brake and wheel wedges.

Get Prepared

You will need your spare tire, a lug wrench, and a jack to change your tire. If you have a hubcap, we recommend removing it before you lift your vehicle. Next, you’ll want to loosen your lug nuts, but don’t remove them completely.

Raise Your Vehicle

Your jack should be placed securely under your vehicle’s frame, near your flat tire. Many vehicles have designated jacking points. We recommend adding a small piece of wood under your jack to keep it from slipping. Then, you should raise your vehicle approximately six inches above the ground.

Remove the Flat Tire

Once your vehicle is raised, you can completely remove your lug nuts and the flat tire. Place it aside in a safe spot.

Add Your Spare Tire

Now, you can add your spare tire. Add the lug nuts back on and tighten them, by hand, as much as you can but not completely.

Lower Your Vehicle

Finally, lower your vehicle to the ground, but not entirely. Tighten your lug nuts completely, using the lug wrench. Now, lower your vehicle and replace the hub cap, if applicable.
